Ghunk,

The wonders of time on the feelings of men.

Mowat is an observer and a good one at that. I'm in the midst of 'First Footsteps in East Africa' ..Sir Richard's preliminary to his trek with Speke to the lake region. It is a long trip of 'mundane' observations and experiences culminated by an entry into the 'forbidden' city of Harrar....Damn Victorian understatement for making writing so hum drum.! I'd rather be reading Mowat....But there is a century of time there and I understand the need to peer through that shadowy realm....so Burton can prove as informative as Mowat..and, if one wishes to loiter over his words, far more exciting.

I am referring to Burton the explorer. And he was much more. You have read an area of his writings I have not even touched, but am not unaware of. My interest is the physical unknown, the hardship, the reality of discovery. In this sense Burton and Mowat have a lot in common. They both ventured into harsh realms and wrote of their experiences.

Thanks for the links. I'll check those out. You ever read Drake's 'Rollin Hot'?

regards,

mnmuench
