Chip Scaling, China Spending Fuel Fab Capex Surge
By George Leopold 12.10.2020

The transition to 7- and 5-nm process nodes and the ramping of Chinese memory production drove 2020 capital spending, with foundry capex accounting for 34 percent of total semiconductor infrastructure investments during the previous 12 months.

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) of China accounted for the lion’s share of infrastructure spending followed by foundry leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), according to IC Insights.
