Xerox Parc was involved, and the early Apple period is part of Forest Gump.

Great video on this which is on youtube is called "Triumph of the Nerds". Wonderful history.

Xerox Parc was involved but Gates did not steal it from Xerox Park. Steve Jobs stole three key features that were on display when he was allowed to tour Xerox Park. "WizzyWig" or What you see is what you get. Ethernet cabling connecting computers (what became 3com) . And Printing that enabled pictures and multiple fonts. (Essentially what became Adobe).

So Jobs developed it from what he saw, then Gates adopted these features much later for a kluge ridden version of the first windows. Maybe not "stolen" but imitated.

In the meantime, the big steal by Gates is that he had BASIC software. IBM came to talk to him and said they really needed and operating system. They knew a guy who had CPM, his name was Kildale. They went to talk to his wife since Prof Kildale wasn't there. His wife wouldn't talk to IBM without lawyers, and IBM was just out to west coast for a short trip. So they asked Gates if he could develop an OS. So gates had to develop and operating system in order to sell Basic. But they didn't have an operating system. They knew a guy who had sort of reverse engineered CPM. He switched the a: drive and the c:drive and called it a new product. So he sold his rewrite of CPM to Microsoft for $50k. Then Microsoft got the business from IBM for what became DOS (Dirty Operating System - later renamed disk operating system) and for BASIC. Later Gates realized he needed a word processor and and spreadsheet app to sell to the clone makers that became most of their business (Office), since they didn't get paid much in their sales to IBM for DOS.
