I agree that the ETSI decision has endorsed QCOM's position as a major technology leader in wireless communications. Its ownership of many cdma patents places it in a very strong position to profit from this decision or even delay or block its implementation should they so choose. I just did a quick search of the U.S. patents (http://www.uspto.gov). Of the 341 patents that mention cdma, MOT holds 54, QCOM 46 and ERICY 34. Qualcomm's total number of patents were 194 and I don't know how many of them are pertinent to cdma but do not specifically mention it.

The E in ETSI stands for European and they only represent the European standpoint. Asia and the US have yet to be heard from before the ITU decides on a standard or family of standards. The CDMA Development Group website indicates they are working on a wideband version of CDMAone that they intend to advocate. This is different than the ETSI standard.

Admittedly QCOM has some hot and heavy thinking and negotiating ahead, but as we have seen before, this is a very astute and clever organization that has great vision and has a way of doing the right thing. I am looking forward to their announcement in response to the ESTI decision and subsequent statements. (Has anyone seen any QCOM statement yet?)
