Unless WDC is massively gaining share on the other NAND makers for some reason, they'd be better of just buying their client PC controllers from SIMO and spending their limited resources elsewhere.

WDC management STRONGLY disagrees with you, as do I. Controllers and raw NAND go hand in hand, and need to be tightly coupled in order to produce the desired performance and durability. You can't just take an off the shelf controller, slap it on a random piece of NAND, and expect to see the screaming performance recently seen in niche market WDC SSD's. If you are a company who merely wants to produce a mediocre product, for those who only care about cost, SIMO controllers will certainly fit the bill.

Everyone's NAND is different, and require custom controllers to maximize performance and durability. One size fits all fits none.
