WDC is not in the business of selling controllers

Of course. It means they have to justify their controller internal development and program maintenance expense (which is significant) through their WDC product sales. WDC products should sell better than products which use SIMO controllers. Otherwise, why bother with all that internal controller development expense?

They use controllers to differentiate their products in the marketplace, according to the requirements of specific customers.

Of course.

Is WDC gaining share in the client SSD market? If so, their strategy may be working. If not, obviously the internal controller development strategy is not working in the client SSD segment. You can talk all you want. But if WDC believes they should make their own controllers so as to do better in their business, then we should see their business outperforming companies which use controllers made from SIMO. The best indicator of that business outperformance would be share gains.

Is WDC gaining share in client SSDs?
