U.S. Army rebukes Michael Flynn

This week Michael Flynn publicly called on Donald Trump to send out the U.S. military to hold a new 2020 presidential election. To be clear, Trump isn’t within a million miles of having the muscle to pull off something like this. But now Flynn is facing pushback for even saying such a thing.
The U.S. Army Chief of Staff, and the Secretary of the Army, issued a joint statement on Friday saying that “There is no role for the U.S. military in determining the outcome of an American election.” Presumably they felt compelled to rebuke Michael Flynn in this manner because he’s a retired U.S. Army General himself.
Donald Trump recently pardoned Flynn for the one felony he was convicted on, as well as for all the crimes he hasn’t yet been charged with in the Mueller probe. But this kind of preemptive pardon is constitutionally flimsy, and it may not prevent Flynn from being charged for other Mueller probe crimes.
In any case, Flynn’s call for the military to nullify the election could be seen as sedition. If Flynn’s antics continue to escalate, it could be a matter of time before he commits additional felonies. Keep in mind that while a preemptive pardon attempts to cover crimes that a person hasn’t yet been charged with, a pardon does not cover any crimes that are committed after the pardon is granted. Flynn could end up behind bars after all. |
