Your second hand is pretty accurate.. although I still have reservations wrt mutations as there are other factors that make a virus dangerous beyond it simply infecting you.. Since it binds to the ACE-2 protein which is static.. the landing gear so to speak from Covid to Covid mutant need be the same to land .. think Tetris :) but it's ability to hide and remain dormant like herpes for example is troubling for one.. Even John's Hopkins doctors can be STUPID... and how many duffuses will key on that ... sigh .. Look at Australia and China.. of course they work when done correctly ..
