I watched Murder on the Orient Express (1974 version with Finney) last night. The movie ends with Poirot opting to go to the Yugoslavian police with the simple solution of a mysterious murderer instead of with the complex one of 12 passengers dispatching Ratched/Cassetti.

It seems one of the major difficulties about taking the 12 culprits to court on the charge of murder would be deciding who was guilty. The doctor says that 3 of the 12 wounds were lethal.

That means that at least 9 and possibly up to 11 of those who stabbed the victim were stabbing into a dead body. It is not a capital crime to stab a dead body.

It's likely an autopsy would determine which of the wound(s) killed him, but how would it be possible to conclude beyond a reasonable doubt who inflicted it? I can only figure that the 12 would be acquitted in such a circumstance.

I don't know if the book brings this point out or not.
