<three states of belief: belief, doubt or disbelief>

While poetic, this conjecture is internal and not testable.

Using a dictionary, the word "belief" is simply imprecise and only the third definition involves any examination of evidence. Whether or not Henry James used it, "belief" is an overused and conflicted word that becomes part of the discussion of politics. It should be avoided in most matters. If I were to do a more useful tripartite - it would be

  • Known
  • Unknown
  • Confusing/Uncertain

You either know a thing to a degree of probability or lack the ability to ask or answer the question. Belief in most things falls into that last bucket. It is frustrating that most things are in that bucket to some degree. For people who like binary things - they just accept that imprecision. Some want certainty - which does not exist.
