QCOM fell today in response to ANAD gloomy prediction for 1998. QCOM actually broke its uptrend. The problem is however not
with wireless telecom growth, but specific to ANAD. ANAD is selling GaAs linear amplifiers. While anyone can make digital GaAs
chips, a strong manufacturing expertise is needed to contain parameter drift in linear applications. No wonder QCOM and NOKA have
decided not to buy from ANAD anymore. Both have in fact switched to RFMD. Most of Far East, Latin and Europe is dedicated to CDMA in
a stark contrast to US, where GSM still dominates. I have no business doubt that it is only a matter of time before most
wireless will be CDMA. I am not a strong bull on QCOM, but see no reason for earnings growth shortfall in '98.
