I think Pfeiffer went after DEC primarily for the latter's global market presence in the server/workstations sector--not so much for its alpha chip technology, nor for the DEC managerial or scientific team. As to the marketing & sales forces: may be--perhaps only initially.

I talked to several people who are hard-core Silicon Valley and Rte 128 inhabitants, and their unanimous view is that the merger can be strategically brilliant if Pfeiffer gets it together--culturally speaking, that is. (Remember the early days of Bay Networks before House took over?)
