pfeif was hired a few mnths after me at cpq and went to europe.
he has been in states since 1989-90. he was like the no. 2 person at cpq before canion left and pfeif took complete control.
i like him, i liked canion too.
you could walk up to either one and give them an idea and speak your mind and say something was wrong.
you could even make a mistake and it didn't ruin your career, in fact at cpq they don't want people frozen with fear. they encourage you to do something and don't fear making mistakes.
on special projects they were careful to put different idea people on the project. or in some cases I was called in and told by the CFO to take a particular view on a project. I was to make this view work and justify it.
Sometimes it was even a bad view.( becuase it was an unpopular view they knew that i could press it through) but they wanted that angle covered rather than everyone agreeing and settling it and then spending the 10 million with no real discussion.
I can remember one time i did such a good job on that view the cfo wanted me to take that i completely demoralized the champion of the other opinion(he was new to compnay).
I remember going to his office and picking him up and telling him that his idea on this was the right way to go and to keep putting the plans together. We eventually ended up with a fantastic solution with all bases covered. It wasn't the postion the cfo told me to champion that won out it was the other position( which I favored anyway). But, when it came time to write the check for 15 million, the cfo rubber stamped the deal since he knew that all bases were covered and it wasn't just a project team that all agreed on everything and lets do it.
after the meetings everyone knew there was nothing personal about the stances taken on ideas. when we decided, then that settled it.
everyone got behind that agreement like it was their own idea.
