I'm pretty sure Tandem (nee Compaq) offers this right now, and I remember reading something recently about NEC going to built a mainframe running N-way Merced on NT.

I'm pretty sure they don't, unless you're talking about a cluster, which is an entirely different animal, one which nobody with a reasonable technical bone in their body would touch, unless they're just trying to get cool TPC numbers ;)

NEC can't build a mainframe running N-way Merced on NT, because existing NT doesn't support that kind of flexibilty, and Merced doesn't exist.

I agree with your economies of scale point, but my point was that those people that seem to be advocating NT as a solution to all problems big and small generally don't know their ass from their elbows when it comes to the types of problems that people encounter on a daily basis in technical computing.
