It’s easy in hindsight to criticize the shooting, but consider the event in real time. She was part of a mob that was breaking through a window and door to gain access to space that the officer was protecting. He could easily conclude she might have a gun or bomb under her coat or in her backpack. The situation was chaotic at beat, and terrifying at worst for the officers on the other side of the door from the mob. It’s surprising that more of the mob weren’t righteously injured or killed by police.
