Intel weighs alternative memory architectures

A bump in Intel's road map for PC main memory will give users more choices in memory types, but it will require that they keep track of
exactly what kind of memory is in each system that they want to upgrade.

Intel had chosen Rambus as the memory technology of the future. (See "Rambus DRAM wins spot as Intel's memory technology.") Now the company is hedging its bets, suggesting that an alternative technology such as Synchronous Link DRAM (SLDRAM) might fit the bill.
