I would suggest that you read The Bond Market by Ray. Pricing, odd lots, and everything else concerning bonds is discussed in over-kill detail.

Last summer I experienced a similar problem during an estate settlement. I discuss and resolve the commission dispute with the regional-office supervising director. In the process I learned that there is a legal commission spread allowed and the deal under negotiation was at the upper limit. We did resolve the matter; the estate received a refund -- so all may not be lost.
