Retired doctors baffled by bureaucracy of enlisting to give Covid vaccine

Retired doctors and nurses hoping to help administer coronavirus vaccines say the bureaucracy involved in getting approved by the NHS has left them feeling patronised and undervalued.

Plans for former GPs, surgeons, physicians and nurses to assist in vaccinating as many people as fast as possible have faced what has been described as “dispiriting layers of red tape”. People have complained of having to work through dozens of online modules including conflict resolution, human rights and data security.

Jessica Jones, 59, worked as a GP for 30 years before retiring from her practice in Sunderland two years ago. She said she had completed a quarter of the modules needed to volunteer after six hours of work across two days.
