Oh please. If we have gotten to the point where we have a MAD standoff between two near peers in the US, we have already lost our democracy. That isn't the situation at all. Much has been made of how the 81 or so million who voted for Biden is a loose coalition, many of whom are just anti-Trump. The fact of the matter is the Trump voters are an even looser coalition. Some of whom bought into the Republican fear-mongering about Biden, Joe Biden mind you, is a dedicated communist. Some of whom bought into the fear-mongering that a Democrat in the White House would mean 99% tax rate and confiscation of guns. Now most voted for Trump because they are used to looking for the (R) after names and voting that way.

What we do have is a large number of far-right nutbars who have adopted Trump as their Lord God. It is pretty clear that Trump was expecting a general uprising where most or all state capitols experienced events similar to what happened in DC. With most state capitols occupied by his followers, he would emerge and claim the presidency for his own. But that didn't happen. While there were some demonstrations across the country, they were small. Mostly non-existent. It looks like most of the crazies packed up and went to DC. And they only had success because the leadership of the Capitol Police seemed unable to deal with a much smaller demonstration than they usually are capable of handling. As to why, I guess that will come out in the fullness of time. However, it was the only success. If the 74 or so million you talk about had the same fervor, things would have been a lot different. The fact is, there just aren't anywhere near that number that are willing to organize and do anything. Much less put their lives on the line.

Now what we do have is the far-right fringe has had their biggest victory to date. So they are coalescing into something approaching unity. Your solution of handing the keys to the country over to them with trembling hands is the stuff of their wildest dreams. Giving them carte blanche for whatever they want to do is not the stuff of peace.

Yeah, I understand the difference between War and Peace. I also understand bullies and what they do when they think they are free to do what they want. What we have is not a standoff between near peers. What we have is a bunch of schoolyard bullies who think they have the whip hand.
