Used to be called caltrops:
Joshua Slocum, first person to sail solo around the world, tells of a night when he anchored in the Straits of Magellan. Assuming he would be attacked by the natives, he spread tacks around the boat deck. He heard the screaming and came out of the cabin shooting. Problem solved.
