Memory chip makers that have banded together to promote the synchronous link DRAM (SLDRAM) alternative to double-data-rate (DDR) and Direct Rambus DRAM announced Wednesday that they have incorporated their consortium into SLDRAM Inc.

Intel supports Direct Rambus DRAM (RDRAM) as the memory technology of the future, and will support Direct RDRAM in the 440BX chip set to be introduced in the second quarter, Morales noted. This gives Direct RDRAM a leg up on the competition, he said.

"Intel is driving the end result," Morales said.

Last April, Siemens announced the development of the first SLDRAM, based on technology jointly developed by Siemens, IBM, and Toshiba. In September, the SLDRAM Consortium released specifications for its first reference devices, due early this year.
