Re the US as a source of antibiotic resitant bugs- it is true that we export these to the third world areas, where they mulitply and in some cases mutate due to the lower level of detection and treatment available. It's also true that stores of previously unkown bugs exist in remote areas which can become resitant due to improper use of antibiotics by underequiped or undertrained doctors in the area.

I don't know all the plays available in the area- but I think more companies are working on this than we realize, some with sizable research budgets. The key today is the advanced research methods being developed over the past few years and hopefully into the future.

The biggest potential roadblock would be the time required to determine safety and effectiveness. The best defense as an individual is to learn how to maximize one's immune system- which in reality does the majority of the defense work (aided by medical technology).

I would be interested in hearing about other Companies.
