Mark, The current issue of something called "MIT technology review" has a cover article on antibiotics:

web.mit.edu

(you can just see the cover there, but there is an option to ask for a free issue)

I glanced at the issue in the bookstore the other day. Cubist and Microcide are mentioned, and those appear for now the logical "pure plays." The article talks quite a bit about Schering-Plough, not a "pure play" for sure, but serious competition in the area.

There is also something said about the neglected role of vaccination (your remark << The best defense as an individual is to learn how to maximize one's immune system>> reminded me of that part), and how this may turn out to be important. This in turn brings up genomics companies like Genome Therapeutics, Human Genome Sciences, Incyte and even Millennium with programs to map, study, exploit the information in whole bacterial genomes. Again, not really "pure plays"

A low tech "pure play" I heard a bit about is Alcide.
