The Constitution is clear: "The president . . . shall be removed from office on impeachment . . . and conviction". It also requires that "judgment in cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal and disqualification".

In other words, the whole purpose of the impeachment provisions of the Constitution are to remove a sitting president from office and (not or) to disqualify him. There is nothing in the Constitution allowing a simple disqualification of a President whose term in office expired before a judgment of conviction in the Senate. In fact, the use of the word "and" in defining what the judgment may provide for makes the whole thing a silly, clownish spectacle.

Oh, and it is very, very bad politics for the Dems to go after a President who is no longer sitting.

Didn't Blunderin' Joe Biden say something about 'healing and unification', blah, blah?
