I was an assistant story editor, more like an apprentice. Too far down the ladder to get credits. Arness would sometimes join us at the Backstage for lunch, which was across the street from the CBS studios and back lot where Gunsmoke was taped.

Those lunches were informal story conferences where different storylines were discussed. People used to send in ideas for episodes and we would go over the suggestions. If one was selected, then the writer was rewarded with a $100 check from CBS, but no credit.

One idea was sent in from a woman in Iowa, handwritten on a single piece of paper and very short. It read: “What would happen if nuns came into Dodge?” That got developed during lunch into the episode when 3 black nuns arrived in Dodge with 3 white orphans.

The question was always, “How do we get Matt out of Dodge?” The usual answer was to have him get shot.
You may ask why get Matt out of town? Several reasons, but mostly he wasn’t much of an actor and was very lazy, couldn’t remember his lines, and couldn’t handle anything very lengthy or complicated. And he was a distraction on the set. So limit his involvement.
