Yes, but he voted for Biden--

John Kasich, a ‘Deeply Worried’ Republican, Steps Up for Biden
John R. Kasich, a lifelong Republican and former rival of President Trump’s spoke at the Democratic convention — and says he will vote for Joseph R. Biden Jr.

A lot of Republicans have left the party, and some of them actually became Democrats even though they have some reservations (e.g., Steve Schmidt).

The Democratic Party in Ohio is a mess. There are pockets of strength, but they used to rely on unions for their political power and the unions in Ohio have been extremely weakened. They haven't found a replacement center of power. The Rs in Ohio are centered on guns, abortion, nativism/racism and evangelical religion for votes, as in many places around the country where the Rs win elections. Mindlessness rules those one issue voters. And then of course there are the business people of low taxes and less regulation, they are the people who make most of the laws, throwing bones to the one issue people in return for their votes.

If Soros really does want to be useful and use his money to affect national politics, he would give Sherrod Brown a hundred million dollars to reconstruct the state party. I don't know if Brown can do it, but if anyone can, it is probably him and his wife. They breathe politics.
