Hi Zeev,

The scope of your interests and abilities never ceases to amaze me. I have been mulling over in my mind one of your earlier posts which contained some formal or archaic (or both)French. Something like: Il fall–t que nous passƒmes i‡i. I'm not sure I remember the exact form. It's probably thirty years since I read any French with the pass‚ simple or historic past and certainly not those weird subjunctives. (See my earlier post today to Sowbug about current English conditional/subjunctive sentences.)

In more modern French, they use the imperfect for the "if" clause and the conditional for the dependent clause. They never use the subjunctive along with "if".

Ex: Si j'avais de l'argent, j'acheterais quelque chose.

But to answer your question, I really don't know. Now I have something else to look up!

Jack
