I just found some of your remarks in the original post interesting.

Now Koan, The thickness of the blade used to cut the wood
is likely 3/16" That means if he makes two cuts, he has displaced 3/8"
of material, poof, gone. That means that each piece, if "equal,
is not 16", but 15 7/8".

This is significant to a real carpenter, or "cutter".

To expect three pieces @ 16" was indeed magical.
