Was the 25th amendmen t used as a threat to stifle Trump?
Mike Pence, not Donald Trump, authorized the U.S. National Guard to deploy in Washington D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021. Has the 25th Amendment already been invoked, or was Pence just informally in charge?

Given that aides close to Donald Trump have reported that the President actually resisted requests and suggestions that the National Guard be deployed I think Mike Pence made the right call.
I will be absolutely frank here. Donald John Trump incited the insurrection that his supporters were involved in on Jan 6th and he was in no hurry to call in the authorities. If Mike Pence had tried to convince Trump to make the decision I would have been extremely critical of that course of action.
Yesterday, the Capitol Building was breached for the first time since 1814. In addition the confederate flag has never flown in the Capitol Building until January 6th 2020. Under these circumstances, Mike Pence, a man with whom I have many disagreements, made the an absolutely correct decision under extremely difficult circumstances. Yes, he acted for the President and he should be commended for his actions. The riots on Jan 6th were an act of insurrection and the domestic terrorists responsible were a clear threat to the nation.
Another Quoran has a theory that Pence and the Cabinet (and he only needs a simple majority of them) have already invoked the 25th Amendment sort of de facto — that they’re using it as a threat against Trump, and that Pence is actually making all the decisions now. I think that makes a lot of sense. They may have informed Trump that they will remove him unless he basically sits in a room and watches TV until Jan. 20. That’s how they got him to make the concession video.
They don’t want Trump to do anything else stupid, but they don’t want the political repercussions of actually invoking it publicly. |
