Sony to Introduce New Note PCs in Early February

January 30, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Sony Corp. said it will add three new models to its Vaio Note notebook computer series in early February.

The new "PCG-729", "PCG-726" and "PCG-723" models have low power consumption Intel Corp. Pentium processors with MMX technology. The processor speed is 266MHz for the PCG-729, 200MHz for the PCG-726 and 166MHz for the PCG-723.

The three models are successors to the existing PCG-719/715/713. They are open-priced, but are expected to be less than 500,000 yen (US$3,970) for the model 729, a little over 350,000 yen (US$2,780) for the model 726 and less than 300,000 yen (US$2,380) for the model 723.

Standard main memory is a 64MB synchronous DRAM for all models, with expandability to 128MB. The hard disk drive is 4GB for the 729 and 2.1GB for both the 726 and 723. Windows95 is pre-installed. The CD-ROM drive is 24x (max.)/17x (avg.), and it can be replaced with a floppy diskette drive or secondary battery.

The products use the MagicGraph128XD graphics chip from NeoMagic Corp. of the United States with 2MB of video memory. The display is a 12.1-in. TFT-LCD for all three models. It is capable of displaying 65,536 colors at 1,024 x 768 resolution in the models 729/726 and 16,770,000 colors at 800 x 600 resolution in the model 723.

Interfaces include TYPE II x 2 or TYPE III x 1 PC card slot with CardBus and ZV port compatibility, one Universal Serial Bus interface and built-in fax modem of 33.6kbps. Also included are a Sound Blaster Pro-compatible sound feature and integrated stereo speakers.

The new model measures 297mm side x 236.5mm deep x 37.6mm high and weighs about 2.6kg when the CD-ROM is used.

All three models use lithium ion secondary batteries that last 2-4 hours for the 729, 2-4.5 hours for the 726 and 2.5-5 hours for the 723. If the separately-priced secondary battery is used, the duration of use doubles.
