I'm very familiar with the electro-absorption type modulators that LU refered to in their PR. One thing they did not mention was at what bit rate the 1000 km result was demonstrated for or in what type of fiber.

I'm very doubtful that these devices can accomplish the 1000 km claim at OC-48 or higher in non-dispersion shifted fiber. External modulators (which most use) will always have less chirp which is the parameter of interest related to this claim.
