Greg, A dark horse might emerge. What if IBM writes a competing OS, like OS2, but a competitor?, or if another does it? What about the Rhapsody from AAPL?. If they get it to work and it offers the ease of use, networking and lack of crashes that have been AAPLs strength at a good price they will get share. However the people who run AAPL are as dumb as hammers. They burned the big lead they had years ago. I think the rate of change of platform is shrinking, and we are hewing to the x86 platform and it is entrenched, but embellished a bit, though at some point Gates must shoot all the old legacy horses that are still gamely running. At some point the CPU makers will want to ditch the x86, and they will need a way to do that without leaving an opening for others, and software writers will be in a tizzy to port all their apps to the new CPUs. I am not sure how that will work out. Look at our stone age TV standard that endured due to legacy TVs still using it?
