John,
I don't have any info about coverage in the US for SYNVISC yet. However, at a recent medical conference I stopped by th W/A booth where they were pushing all their NSAIDS and asked about "the real thing". I was directed to one rep who was very knowledgeable about SYNVISC and even had a syringe full to give interested parties of "feel" of the product. He commented that the competitor's product was like water, SYNVICS has almost the consistency of KY jelly. He also commented that SYNVISC is NOT covered by Canadian Health Plan yet all are very impressed with the sales going on in Canada to local citizens paying for it themselves and US citizens going over the border to buy it before local approval.
My feeling is that most managed care org. will cover it soon and Medicare will do the same. The adverse effects of NSAIDS and delaying or alternative to knee replacement for some are too attractive not to offer this product. Your quote certainly sound like the author knows the score.
