Bill,
The senate has no jurisdiction to try a private citizen.
They're not trying a private citizen. They're trying a former President of the United States.

Conviction in the Senate will most likely mean Trump loses the following privileges:

- Secret Service protection.

- Intelligence briefings.

- The right to run for any public office in the future.

- The privilege of carrying the honor of the presidency should Trump decide to do any diplomatic missions abroad.

All of this may not seem like a BFD to you, but they're significant enough to carry on with a trial in the Senate.
