Stockman; Since Intel made both the chipsets and the CPUs they could always price the product under the outside board makers. It was a form of vertical integration that partly backfired as it forced other chip set makers to cut their prices making Intel also drop prices to the point where the motherboard operation at Intel was not as profitable as other uses of capital. I did not follow it closely, but after a while the Intel share of motherboards fell, but they are still a major factor.
Anyone got details on this?, it was in the EE press at the time.
