Less than half the gold that came out of California was accounted for, even today there are dozens of illegal underground operations quietly working away not far from Sacramento. Even with only half accounted for more gold came out than investment money going in. In Canada’s Klondike more money went in than ever came out in gold. Every time it rains gold is washed out of the hills in Placer County. There is a similar place in Wisconsin, near Fond du Lac except it is diamond not gold washed into the creeks.
