The Republican leaders are mostly just garden variety criminals working for the rich right wing e.g. the Koch brothers. Their supporters are a collage of racists, bigots and sexists (why the south is Republican) , mentally challenged and the uneducated. The leaders know this and they fool their followers e.g. Lee Atwood's southern strategy, and demonize the democrats with their talk of guns, god and hating gays and how the democrats want to take their culture away from them and they are too uneducated to see the ploy. The Republican party is a house of cards built on lies and corruption and the people are finally seeing it. Hundreds of thousands have fled the Republican party since Jan 6th.
