Pretty much, aided and abetted by Lee Atwater. Strom Thurmond switched parties and started campaigning for Goldwater. Later on, Jesse Helms, Trent Lott, and Rick Perry became R's, while Robert Byrd and George Wallace renounced their sins and stayed D's.
