Bill,
Re -- Intel motherboards...

Intel IMO would have to be very careful for anti trust reasons not to tie MB's to CPU's and chipsets. Thus no inherent price advantage to Intel.

The reason Intel went into Motherboards was because of the transition to Pentium. These other manufactureres were slow to develop MB's and were convinced like Compaq that 486 was the way to go.
After all that the MB makers start crying foul. And ALI BABBLE yells that Intel is putting its customers out of business.

As for Intel not making money on MB's, that is true according to reports in various trade mags and CC. Intel knew the MB was a break-even business, but it helped Intel sell more chips in the long run.

ALI BABBLE's Serious lack of reasoning doesn't realize that
1. MB makers were not Intel customers.
2. MB makers were free to develop MB's were better and cheaper than Intel's. Intel was tied by anti-trust.
3. MB makers had all the customers in IBM/CPQ/DELL and others who were buying from them.
