<The problem is not how EASY it is to buy S3, but what strategic sense it would be to buy S3. HP would be better off buying 3DFX.> 3DFX makes high end graphic chips. If HP wants to become the largest PC maker, the low-end is where it is at. You don't become the largest PC maker by selling a lot of servers or graphics workstations. The volume is in the low-end.
