I can't argue with you other than to point out that doing so would have caused a drop in the stock market. Now it would have recovered, but that was his primary concern. Now there wouldn't have been stopping him from pumping trillions into it like he did to re-inflate the market, but that apparently wasn't on the table. I guess he figured he could BS his way through whatever happened.

When you think about it, he bankrupted his casinos the same way. He into it with only a hazy idea of the issues, invested poorly, made crappy decisions based on the most optimistic scenarios and tried to wing it. If it doesn't work out, hang it all on someone else and wash his hands. He doesn't think strategically at all, else he would have done something more like you suggest.
