Quite likely, a “Netanyahu” would have played it differently from Eshkol. I think the overall idea was to stir towards a settlement - which is what happened with Egypt after 1973. It was probably a wise step to release the Egyptian army from encirclement. They could no longer fight.

About supporting the Hungarian revolution... I’m not so sure. That would be a major war - and we’d be lucky if it wouldn’t turn nuclear. Conventionally, the US would not have won. Hungary is land bound - the Navy would be of little use. Surrounded at that time by the Warsaw Pact. Austria, Germany and I think all other Euro powers would stay out.
