About supporting the Hungarian revolution.

I had just got back from two years in Germany in the Army. I was angry about Ike's decision. Part of the reason the Hungarian's rose was that our "Radio Free Europe" was calling on all of the slave states to rise up. When Hungary did the Russians left and waited two weeks to see what we would do before going back in to crush the people.

I believe to this day that if Ike had dropped an Airborne Division with anti-Tank support into Hungary during that delay the Russians would not have started WWIII over it. The Soviets were a "Potemkin Village" all through our cold war with them. Our CIA inflated their danger and made them look powerful to up their budget from Congress.

What we did from 1945 until the Soviets went under in 91 was to accept the Soviet dominance of Eastern Europe. The Soviets took advantage of our Religious interest in Vietnam to tie us up there for 12 years. We got in there under Ike because it was run by Catholics. The Soviets really enjoyed watching us make fools of ourselves there and lose 50K soldiers for nothing.

We could have brought the North Vietnamese commies to their knees without ever putting a troop on the ground. Bombing their power plants and mining Haiphong harbor would have left them freezing to death in the dark.
