56K standard bodes well After months on the market, the 56K modem should become a viable consumer product this week. To date, the 56K's sales have lagged and its performance has been subpar -- mainly because there are two competing technologies, one from 3Com and the other from Lucent and Rockwell. Now the International Telecommunications Union is set to resolve the compatibility problem by approving a technology standard, probably by Friday.
