Chiming in here as a founder <G>. After a few posts, your userlevel will be upgraded and unlock certain features, like private messages. I believe this was done to prevent robots and spammers from overwhelming the site. I forgot the number of posts necessary, I started to use the site in the mid nineties, so it has been a while <G>.
