Similar story here but a variation. I grew up where all the roads were north/south or east/west, the midwestern grid. For a long time I had a very good sense of direction, even after I moved to the East coast where the roads are winding in all directions, many going back to deer paths etc. Still my sense of direction was fairly good. Then a few years ago, something changed. We were searching for a location on some winding streets in Milwaukee and the sense of direction left me. Almost a dizzy feeling. What should have been north was west instead etc. Hasn't worked well since. Good thing GPS came along :)
I think about the days when we used to regularly navigate off paper maps and got around fine. I still have some paper maps but only use them now for a sense of perspective rather than navigating.
