The goal of socialism is communism." -- Lenin
I understand that socialism isn't communism, that much of what ails the youth is not "capitalism," it's things like the Federal Reserve exerting monster control over the economy and helping the rich get richer and the poor stay poor. Central banking is, in itself, more akin to socialism than capitalism (economic control in the hands of a handful of elite, not organic and bottom up).
The proper road forward is not to continue to feed even more power to the central authority -- that is precisely what's destroying us. "More socialism" isn't the answer, it's the very problem. The road forward is to empower the people, which is what capitalism does. Socialism does the opposite: It steals power from the people and gives that power to the elite -- under the guise of "giving" to the people. The more power you give the Feds, the less power you and I (and our children) will have.

I believe last time we have had unbridled Capitalism was before the Federal Reserve (1913). We had exponential growth of the standard of living then.
**** IMO, we haven't had "capitalism" in decades. We have central bank-controlled fascism. Today's Socialism is a populist distraction to divide and appease the masses in order to maintain control..

I've had the song below stuck in my head for a few days... always makes me think of the Fed and the rest of America's elite and "invincible" leadership. (This is from an album called "End of an Empire," btw)

You're looking down And feeling so profound You're so impressed by your own false humility The sky descends The ground is rising up An unhappy ending to your sense of deity
You feel so safe inside the walls you fortified, Supremacy implied Who dares to overthrow?

Millennials are the first generation in American history to have a net positive view of socialism.
Remember that politics is downstream from culture... i.e., it's only going to get worse as the Silent Generation moves on and Boomers age out. GenX is the last generation that still remembers the mass murder of Soviet Russia, but we (collectively) have failed to pass the lessons of history to our youth. It's very telling that our society treats those who favor communism as "edgy," when we should treat it as every bit as dangerous as Nazism. The body count of communism is actually significantly higher -- yet our so-called "intellectuals" fall for its naïve lure repeatedly, and they teach our youth accordingly.
Seventy percent of millennials in a new poll say that they are somewhat or extremely like to vote for a socialist candidate.
The YouGov–Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation poll released on Monday also found that 50 percent of millennials, defined as between the ages of 23 and 38, and 51 percent of Generation Z, or those ages 16 to 22, have a somewhat or very unfavorable view of capitalism, an increase of 8 and 6 percentage points, respectively, from last year.
Only 44 percent of Generation X, 33 percent of baby boomers and 33 percent of the silent generation said they were somewhat or extremely likely to vote for a socialist candidate. thehill.com

As I see it, human nature is what it is -- it hasn't changed for the whole of recorded history, so it's not likely to change tomorrow. Humans will keep repeating the same mistakes. As such, bad policies are only possible because we've given that power to our leaders, and our leaders are, and always will be, flawed humans. Even if we had the best, most honorable leader, who ushered in a golden age -- eventually that power would shift to the next leader, who would screw it all up, either through greed or through incompetence.
You are saying this yourself, just not in those terms: "The problem is we've given a central authority [the Fed] enough power to bury us all with bad policy."
That, in a nutshell, is how I view socialism. If you understand that -- that giving significant power to a central authority will ALWAYS eventually end in bad policy that buries us all -- then you understand one of my root oppositions to socialism.
I don't see any kind of answer in giving more power to the government, I only see more problems.
Sure, capitalism has problems. But that doesn't mean another system won't end up creating even more problems. Least of which, capitalism is the only system that isn't linked to the government (socialism is), and I tend to be very, VERY skeptical of the government's ability to manage anything.
Freedom always comes with problems. In prison, you get three square meals a day and have all your basic needs met, including medical -- but no way in hell I would ever voluntarily make that trade. With socialism, once we've given that power up, then (just like with the Fed), we ain't getting it back. Better we keep it, problems and all.
As I see it, we need to go "backwards," not "forward": We need to take back some of our power, not give up more of it. That, to me, would be truly progressive.
*** Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT advocating for total anarchy. I agree that some government is necessary. The government stepping in and saying, "Hey, you can't do stuff that harms others" is sometimes necessary. The government stepping in and saying, "Hey, we're going to take 50% (or more) of the fruits of your hard work and spend it however as WE see fit," is a bridge too far, though.
Which brings to mind the funny thing about Millennials and socialism -- they always assume they'll be in that tiny, tiny percentage of people who end up on the net receiving end of the programs, not the huge percentage of people that get shafted (who put in more than they take out, like most of us are doing with Social Security even as we speak) and who have to do the actual work.
**** Only a minor variation on the theme -- Keynes represents socialist tendencies (top-down central control), Hayek represents capitalist tendencies (bottom up naturally-emergent markets). For years, we've opted to follow Keynes, not Hayek. More of what already ails us simply can't be the solution. youtube.com

to add from another.... saving a post...
"My step-father's family escaped Hungry in the 50's to get away from USSR oppression / communism they installed after WWII. His family left immense wealth to escape to 'freedom' in the US. Now 80 years old, he tells stories of what they gave up to leave and what life was like during that time. He has been speaking about it for the last decade but now his 'predictions' are starting to materialize. Just one man's point of view."
*** Biden Declares the Constitution is NOT Absolute Ensuring Revolution

Biden has targeted guns with the end goal to disarm America entirely. He has stated: “ No amendment to the Constitution is absolute.” The real objective is to compel everyone to register every gun so they can enter your house without a warrant to seize your weapons. What they are doing is dropping out their real objective, one tiny drop at a time. The Biden Administration is now also urging the Supreme Court to let police bust into your home and seize guns without a warrant. The end game is to disarm Americans completely in hopes of preventing a revolution when they even end the right to vote in any meaningful way as in Europe.
The Fourth Amendment declares,
“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

The entire American Revolution was born over illegal searches by the king. It is very sad that Biden and the Democrats have no respect for the Constitution whatsoever. John Adams, Second President, listened to the four-hour speech of the defense lawyer James Otis (1725-1783) who argued against the king’s Writs of Assistance in February 1761 that allowed the government to arbitrarily search whatever they suspected for any reason. History repeats. This is precisely what the Democrats are arguing before the Supreme Court to eliminate the Fourth Amendment. This is devastating to human rights and the very idea of a free society of “We the People.” It is a terrible day we face and this is why I say republics are the worst form of government. Biden never said anything about these objectives. He gets people to vote for him on a false agenda, no different than a fund manager given a false report claiming he made 300% last year when he really lost 50%. This is outright FRAUD!
Let me make something VERY clear. Part of the Build Back Better agenda from the World Economic Forum is to eliminate all democratic rights. To enter your home without a warrant means they do not have to claim there is probable cause that you even have a weapon. That means every home can be violently searched at will. The Biden Administration is attacking every amendment head-on, from free speech, religion (e.g., locking down churches), to the Second Amendment right now. They already have obliterated Due Process of Law and want to repeal the Fourth Amendment effectively. If you disarm Americans, then there is also no reason for the police to be armed, as is the case in London.
