>> Why not a national ID that gets assigned at birth?
That's a taller order, of course, but I find no reason that we should have, e.g., multiple insurance policy numbers to track, or delivery addresses, SSN, etc. The shift to the MBI was painless and I see no reason the the National ID couldn't be assigned to the birth certificate and remain the number forever.
But I haven't given it a ton of thought.
It is absurd, however, to have humans voting and no way to know whether it is the person they claim to be. It is totally inconsistent with democracy and the last election absolutely proves it (recently, a court literally had to order Pennsylvania to remove dead people from its voter rolls. They actually opposed it, for Christ's sake).
The obvious issue is technological change over time. And the fact that some people you do business with will always want to use their own IDs. I see it constantly with health insurance companies, who create new series of IDs endlessly. |
