An authoritarian government will have an authoritarian at the helm. But authoritarian postures exist in many arenas. The stereotype of a strict teacher would be authoritarian, for example. And authoritarian behavior in a government leader could be a harbinger of an attempt at authoritarianism. So, we have Trump's comments from a covid task force meeting a year ago:
Trump: When you say my authority, the president's authority, not mine, because it's not me. This is when somebody is the President of the United States, the authority is total and that's the way it's got to be.
Other speaker: It's total. Your authority is total?
Trump: It's total. It's total-

When you follow that up with a coup attempt after the election, you have an authoritarian taking over a democratic republic potentially leading to authoritarianism.
Think about that next time you try to mistakenly apply the authoritarian label to Biden. |
