Scangraphics Unit, Sedona GeoServices, Inc. Announces a New, Low-Cost Process for Producing Digital Elevation Models
LIMERICK, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 3, 1998--Sedona(TM) GeoServices, Inc., a subsidiary of Scangraphics(R), Inc. (NASDAQ: SCNG) announced today that it has developed a new process for the creation of 30-Meter 7.5 Minute Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data. This new process will enable Sedona GeoServices to offer DEMs, which complement their current Digital Line Graph (DLG) products, with significantly higher quality than those currently available, and at breakthrough prices. The USGS has indicated that it will spend approximately $3,000,000 on DEMs in 1998. Further, these DEMs, known as Level 2 DEMs, may provide the foundation for Level 3 DEMs, a data set on which the USGS is placing a priority for national coverage.
DEMs describe the elevation of a given area. This data is very useful for city and state planning purposes, as well as a multitude of other uses where elevation, slope and land aspect are important for geospatial analysis. Sedona GeoServices is also working on the integration of hydrography (surface water features) into the DEM production process which will form a basis for revision and update of existing production.
Laurence Osterwise, President and CEO of Scangraphics stated, "This is an exciting breakthrough for Sedona GeoServices. It is our understanding that USGS has placed a high priority on DEM development and revision. Sedona GeoServices' new process will position the company as a strong competitor for the remaining DEM development as well as the planned revision and update of DEMs for the entire country." |
